A trade route is a logistics network identified as a series of routes and stoppages used for the commercial transport of cargo. The term can also be used to refer to trade on bodies of water. Allowing goods to reach distant markets, a single trade route consists of long-distance arteries, which may be further linked by smaller networks of commercial and non-commercial transport routes. Notable trade routes were the Amber Road, which served as a reliable network for long-distance trade. [1] Maritime trade along the Spice Route became prominent during the Middle Ages, when nations resorted to military means to control this influential route. [2] During the Middle Ages, organizations such as the Hanseatic League became increasingly prominent, with the aim of protecting the interests of merchants and trade. In modern times, the major trade routes of commercial activity shifted from Old World to new routes between modern nation-states. This activity was sometimes carried out without the traditional protection of trade and under international free-trade agreements, allowing commercial goods to cross the border with relaxed restrictions. [4] Modern-day innovative transportation includes pipeline transportation and relatively well-known trades involving railroads, automobiles, and cargo airlines.
